Fifty-Nine Bishops and Waiting

A comprehensive list compiled by InsideCatholic.com reveals that more than 80 U.S. bishops have proclaimed abortion and the life issues to be the defining issues in the upcoming election, including 22 bishops who signed on to a joint statement by the New York bishops, and another 10 bishops who signed on to a Pennsylvania joint statement (Free Republic)

At this time, the Archbishop of Milwakee has not issued a statement, nor has the Bishop of Green Bay.

However, Bps. Listecki (LaCrosse) and Morlino (Madistan) have done so.

Abp. Timothy Dolan may yet essay on the issue. The closest he's come is this:

...abortion is a complex issue; ...people of good will need to work creatively to create a just society where the poor have options to care for their babies, born and pre-born - a point powerfully made in many documents of the American bishops, including "Faithful Citizenship," the U.S. bishops' pastoral statement on political responsibility

...printed in the Milwaukee JS in September.

  1. Thanks. I was looking for your e-mail address to ask you this very same thing a short time ago.

  2. Yes, and please remember that Pope John Paul II spoke out against the Iraq War when it was in the planning stages. Pro-Choice is more than just abortion. What about the 750,000 additional civilian deaths in Iraq as a result of the war, or sending 4,000of our bravest to die for a lust of oil? If the GOP cares so much about ending abortion, why didn't they overturn Roe v. Wade when they had control of all 3 branches of government? Because it is just a political ploy for votes and they could care less for human life! Obama will be president soon and you will find out that he is a real Christian, not just a recent convert for convenience like Bush or McCain.

  3. Yes, the 750,000 deaths over the last five years because of the war in Iraq are terrible.

The thing is--legal abortion, just in in the United States, has killed 750,000, as well--in the last 10 months.

You want to argue comparative evils? The sheer scale of the slaughter from abortion dwarfs everything else out there.

(Incidentally--if you think being able to overturn Roe was a mere matter of gaining "control of all 3 branches of government," I've got a bridge in Brooklyn you might be interested in.)

  4. Your asssertion that there were "750K additional civilian deaths" in Iraq is completely unfounded, by the way.
