How Stupidity Happens

Headless has a roadmap of "groupthink" symptoms, which include:

Illusion of Invulnerability, Illusion of Morality, Pressure for Conformity, Illusion of Unanimity

He even provides concrete examples--like AlGore & Co.

But don't for one second think that Gummint-types are the only "groupthinkers" out there. Just remember that the disease usually leads to death.

  1. I'll assume that you're posting without recognizing the irony of this versus your Catholicism posts.

  2. And I will assume that you rarely show such ignorance of Catholicism.

  3. The difference, quite frankly, grumps, is that Catholicism is the truth.

It actually stands for something real and everlasting, whereas the liberal group du jour will fade.

  4. See, Grumps! It's not an illusion! It's the Truth! They have a corner on Truth!

  5. Yes, john, we do.

Folks like you and capper and grumps can be as jaded as you please. It's futile to try and explain things to you if you refuse to understand it.

  6. Oh, we can understand, and just not agree.

  7. Fine.

But there'd ultimately be no point - there is no point - in saying "I believe X but believe A, B and Q are also the truth."

Your view of Catholicism - with grumps and John - is based on the false, biased, and ignorant reporting of the media. And yet you called this enlightened. It isn't.

I know the alternative viewpoint, and found it sorely lacking.

  8. Gee, Amy, thanks for correcting my misperception. I thought I learned about Catholicism in the Catholic Church I used to go to.

I found the Church to be hypocritical and false. Here's a shocker for you, there are other Christians out there, that aren't Catholic. Shocking, isnt' it?

But thanks for making the assumptions of the uninformed clearer for us.

  9. Let me put it differently:

In this era, and in the Western World, one is free to be Christian, Jewish, Hindu, Atheist, or Elvis-worshipper. There are no albino assassins pursuing Capper or John, no yenta commandos out to kill the secularized Jews I know, and no Pomapoured Inquisitions.

OTOH, try to express a politically incorrect view in academia and see how far one gets...

  10. Of course there's no albino assassin pursuing me. It's a red-haired assassin.

  11. I don't have red hair.

BTW, you, too, can find truth. All you need is reason, the complement to Faith.

Not surprised to read that you quit the Church, Capper. But 'the Church' is not hypocritical. Some of the people IN the Church are...

  12. There are too many discrepencies between the Bible and their teachings for me to tolerate.

And I don't like the emphasis on ritual vs. meaning.

But that is just me being me.
