Jiblog's Squirrel Has Cousins

Still my opinion that the best treat for a squirrel is 40 grains of high-speed lead:

Barb Dougherty, a 30-year Postal Service employee, said she was attacked and bitten Monday by a squirrel while delivering mail in Oil City, about 75 miles north of Pittsburgh

"I saw it there on the porch, put the mail in the box and turned to walk away and it jumped on me."

The animal ran up her leg and onto her back, she said

An ambulance took Dougherty to a hospital, where she was treated for cuts and scratches.

    I wonder if town squirrel is any tastier, or not, than wild. I've got lots of fat, red squirrels that mutilate my lawn every spring and fall. I'm fattening them up with a couple pumpkins on the doorstep, and what's left from the walnut tree's windfall.
    Local ordinance prohibits me from shooting them, I think, so what other options do I have?

    If you're situated correctly--that is, either you not easily seen and/or you have neighbors who don't care--use an air rifle.

    No noise.

    Gamo sells an excellent one, the 1000, which fires target-grade pellets at about 1000 fpm., and is exceptionally accurate.

    I went to Gamo's site, and found a couple of cool .117 rifles, one even capable of sub-inch groups @ 30 yds. Might be a nice gift for son #1 in a couple years.

    here's the cool one, the Shadow 1K Red Dot. Fires a .177 pellet @ 1000 fsp, and nice accuracy to boot. Just over $200.

    Frankly, if it's going to be a gift to a young'un, go with this:

    Kids should learn with iron sights, not red-dots or 4x scopes. And even with my superannuated eyeballs, I can use those iron sights (really, hi-viz red front/green rear) VERY effectively.

    It puts a three-round group into 1 ragged hole + 1 hole, .60" center-to-center.

    The rifle is set up to add either red-dot or a 4x scope, by the way.

    Finally, do NOT purchase their "Raptor" slugs. Use Gamo's "target" slugs. The Raptors don't quite fit into the chamber--it's a matter of 1/1000ths, but that makes all the difference in the world.

    Wow, spec-wise, the Raptors look great, but that goes to show the value of judging something from the paper.

    Son #1 is still 6, so I may wait another year, especially since the break/cock effort is is just under what he weighs, total, right now. I guess there's a question for another post: What age to start them shooting, and what rifle to let them shoot with?
